Geography of Bhilai

Bhilai located in the Durg district of Chhattisgarh is about 22 kilometres west to Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh on the main Howrah–Mumbai rail line and National Highway 6. It coordinates at 21.21°N 81.38°E and is spread over an area of about 269.45km2. It is popularly called as the 'Steel City of Central India' or the 'Industrial Cubo' for bring home to famous Bhilai Steel Plant and other industries.

Climate of Bhilai

Bhilai enjoys the tropical type of climate- hot in summers and cool and dry in winters. Winter lasts from October to February, summer season from March to May and monsoon from June to September. The summer temperature ranges from about 23°C to 40°C, the month of May experiences very hot winds called ‘Loo’. Summer season in Bhilai is hot and exhausting and is generally avoided. The pattern of rainfall is highly unpredictable and hence, the rainy season is not suitable for traveling.

The percentage of humidity is very low in the month of May, whereas it is high during July, August and September. Though winter temperature is around 10°C to 25°C, January being the coldest month, the temperature at time dips as low as 3°C to 4°C.The local climate of the city and its surroundings is to a certain extent influenced by the industrial and the urban complex.Therefore, the best time to visit Bhilai is during the winters, from October to March. The climate is cool, pleasant and ideal for enjoying the scenic beauty of the lush green surroundings.

Topography of Bhilai

Bhilai is surrounded by Durg Tehsil towards North, Balod Tehsil towards South , Patan Tehsil towards East , Dondilohara Tehsil towards west . It has a rigid, hard and complex topography owing to the formation of rocks of the pre-Cambrian period. This area comes under the Gondwana land track of the south .The city falls under the influence of Kharun and Seonath, tributaries of river Mahanadi, flowing from west to east. Rocks of Dharwar, ancient plutonic and Cuddapah system are found in this city and its surrounding area, mainly due to the pressure and internal movement of the earth.

Soil and Vegetation in Bhilai

The base of Bhilaian soil is limestone and sandstone, which are reddish due to presence of iron and clay particles. The main soil types found here include:
  • Matasi- It is a yellow sandy soil with a mixture of clay and is quite suitable for growing rice.
  • Dorsa- It is loamy soil, suitable for a variety of crops.
  • Bhata- It is a type of sandy soil with coarse texture and red in colour. It is unproductive and is found adjacent to industrial sites.
Rice is grown in areas where Matasi soil is found. However, due to a large number of industries and the presence of Bhata soil, there is lack of vegetation. Broad-leaved deciduous forests are found here. Also there are a number of decoration and shadow trees planted on the roads by the management of Bhilai Steel Plant.

The important minerals in and around Bhilai city include limestone, iron-ore, dolomite, manganese, graphite, quartz, building stone, lead etc. There are a variety of industries in Bhilai due to this availability of raw materials within a radius of about 250 km. Because of the vast occurrence of limestone in the Cuddapah formation, a number of cement factories have been established in Bhilai. Similarly, the presence of many mines in and around Bhilai city can be attributed to the availability of iron-ore on a large scale.
